WoW, Dragonflight patch 10.1 adds another zone towards the Dragon Isles, but amid the smog and stalactites lurk the MMO's cutest creatures up to now: the Niffen.
Sure there’s another zone in WoW Dragonflight patch 10.1, opening new quests, new WoW Dragonflight Dragon glyphs, and much more, however, the best thing about the following World of Warcraft content patch may be the Niffen. Adorable mole-like creatures who use their noses to navigate the all-new Zaralek Cavern, I asked the MMO‘s lead quest designer Maria Hamilton and production director Patrick Dawson what we’ll wake up to with one of these little guys.
“The idea is the fact that they’re like moles,” Hamilton said. “They burrow as well as their eyesight isn't very good, so culturally they refer to things by how they smell. Their entire society is made around scent trails and also the scent of home.”
She proceeds to reveal a few of the “fun activities” players can engage in alongside their new pets. “One of these is called ‘Sniffen Seeking,’ which allows you to visit [around] having a Niffen buddy to visit find additional caverns that you simply can’t reach without burrowing together with your Niffen friend.
“They [find caverns] by using their nose, so many times you be interested in getting a particular type of thing, plus they associate that having a specific smell, so they’ll take you to certain caverns. Then there’s several puzzle gameplay to achieve whatever the treasures may be in that place, or fight the enemies for the reason that place.”
“They have an entire renown track too,” Dawson chimes in. “So you’ll have the ability to interact with them as if you would with the other renown factions available.”
As I believed Dawson and Hamilton, I have decided that what I want to do in Embers of Neltharion is befriend the Niffen. Gone is my allegiance towards the Murlocs (okay that’s perhaps a lie); the Niffen are my close friends now.
All jokes aside, however, the truth that Niffen’s entire worldview is informed by scent is a unique idea. As Hamilton mentions, the sulfur pools of Zaralek Cavern are “very smelly,” and also the Niffen “love smelly things,” which makes it the perfect spot for their odd little society. We’ve never witnessed a creature such as this in previous WoW expansions, and I can’t wait to connect to them and roam into many of these mysterious new caverns.
