The PvP Arena functions as follows You need to indicate that you're looking to fight and the system will do it. Continue to play and you'll be informed that a match is in the works and once confirmed, you'll be transported to the PvP alternate world to face a player of the same level of skill.
Since all these PvP combats are being played in a separate server during your participation, all of your items and levels are lost and you'll get a standard list of stats. You'll then be able to select a type of combat that will boost certain stats. You then pick a second mode of fighting that differs from the one you chose.
Once the fights are completed, you'll earn rank points and reward points when you win a battle (1v1 Battle or Tournament) that the game arranges for you. You will be able to create duels and tournaments by hand, they won't award the points.
As part of the effort to cut down on RMT and improve the experience, all rewards that aren't cosmetic will only be usable in PvP able areas. You won't be able to take on anything except other players by using them. Certain of these rewards are untradeable, where you'd expect them to be traded. This is a deliberate move in order to limit the appeal to RMT spammers and scammers looking for items.
