As the Browns currently at zero-10 and on a realistic path to Mut 24 Coins a losing season, a lot of people are thinking about ways to save the team and bring the Browns to the glory that hasn't been attained. However, unlike the majority of them, I'm not in offering a tangible plan to make this happen, instead, I'm looking at how it could have been accomplished before the entire thing took place to create the 2016 Browns an improved team.
The primary reason why the Browns currently are in the position they're in is that they've made a mess of so many draft picks in recent seasons. Therefore, in the hopes of changing the course of history I've decided to travel into the past (and in the past) to find out what the Browns would be doing in a simulation of 2016 scenario if they had picked better players in the process. There are some rules to this exercise:
Only first-round selections will be assessed. Since the biggest effect is usually wrought by the first round selections and it's far too optimistic to think that the Browns to be able to make an ideal draft throughout the entire process and therefore, we will only look at the most prominent misses.
Selections will be replaced at the point the Browns were actually drafted, so any trading that the Browns made before making the choice will be preserved.
In most instances we'll presume that the player selected from the Browns in reality is actually drafted by the team we're trying to remove the better player. This makes things more simple and won't require any modification of the draft. We will however be adding replacement-level players to spots as needed to fill in the gaps left by the removal of players from teams.
In the end, despite achieving the winning streak however, it wasn't enough to allow the Browns to take the division, and the team fell during the wild Card game against the Jaguars and, of all teams. It's hard to not see this season as a huge success in comparison to the actual replica of the Browns which has every one of the Browns top draft choices contributing in the substantial way as you would think of.
Conclusions
While we changed the five drafts between 2011 and 2015 and changing the Browns poor picks using (arguably) the top selections, we could not get them to the Super Bowl. Browns into their first Super Bowl. It at least brought them to the playoffs, and proved how talented the Browns could have been had they been able to make better draft choices along the way.
