Article 23: A strict new national security bill is passed by the Hong Kong legislature
The Legislative Council of Hong Kong has overwhelmingly approved a new national security law that increases the authority of the government to suppress opposition. New laws on treason, espionage, external meddling, state secrets, and sedition were included in the Safeguarding National Security Law, which was passed on Tuesday. New authorities, according to Chief Executive John Lee, are required to preserve Hong Kong's standing. Critics claim they will be used to stifle dissent further and are overly ambiguous.
