Natural gas prices fall sharply, hurting the oil sector's balance sheets.
A significant decline in natural gas prices from a year ago has resulted in lower first-quarter results for US and European oil majors. After reaching all-time highs in 2022 due to a combination of rising prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a jump in demand following the COVID-19 pandemic, oil and gas companies' results are now declining.
African Women in Technology founder Anie Akpe joins Al Jazeera's Samantha Johnson in this episode of On The Record. Akpe thought it was time for that to change after attending a technology conference years ago when the majority of attendees were men. Akpe and Johnson discuss how some African traditions and a male-dominated industry work together to keep women out of the technological mainstream. Thus, the a need to establish an organization similar to African Women in Technology. Akpe also discusses the real-world obstacles that women frequently face while attempting to enter the tech industry.

South Africa's mining job losses are giving the ANC serious electoral problems as unemployment rises.
The unemployment rate in South Africa is at an all-time high. According to statistics, one in three persons do not have a job. The industry with the most recent layoffs is mining. Furthermore, the government is under pressure to generate employment and draw in voters with just two months until the elections.
