There are concerns over who will benefit from the technology and at what cost because, even though much artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that make headlines today are created in Silicon Valley, a large portion of the labor force driving the boom is located in the Global South. The director of the Digital Futures Lab, Urvashi Aneja, along with Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, examine the effects AI is already having on communities in the Global South, ranging from labor conditions to democracy and the environment, and why nations must go beyond "catching up with the North" when determining the role AI can and should play in their societies.
