The Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, has eased sanctions against Niger in response to a military takeover that raised fears of national disintegration. The regional bloc has established prerequisites for communication and interaction with other nations. The coup that occurred earlier this month resulted in President Mahamadou Issoufou's removal. In reaction to the coup, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger, including border closures and trade suspensions. Although the situation is still precarious, easing the sanctions is a welcome step towards resolving the problem.
