What effect would the reduction in UNRWA funds have on Gaza? Speaking with Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur is Marc Lamont Hill. Since October 7th, more than 26,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza, and another 1.7 million have been displaced, making the humanitarian situation in the region worse. Following Israel's accusations that 12 UNRWA personnel were involved in the October 7th bombings, at least a dozen nations have said they will no longer be providing funding to the organization.
Following Israel's accusations that 12 UNRWA personnel were involved in the October 7th bombings, at least a dozen nations have said they will no longer be providing funding to the organization. Since UNRWA has been a vital source of humanitarian relief in Gaza, why have nations stopped supporting it during a crisis and solely based on accusations? What will become of the civilian population that depends on the agency to survive? Marc Lamont Hill discusses the upcoming effects of UNWRA's funding cuts with Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory.

Japan's economy is no longer ranked third.

Japan's economy is no longer the third biggest in the world. Germany surpassed the Asian nation in that ranking after the latter entered a recession and contracted during the final half of 2023. According to official data, sluggish domestic demand caused Japan's GDP to contract unexpectedly. Due to this, the central bank's intentions to end its highly loose monetary policy this year have become less assured.

Regarding Israel's Rafah offensive, South Africa urgently requests the International Court of Justice.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has been requested by the South African government to assess whether Israel's proposal to prolong military operations in Rafah "requires that the court uses its power to prevent further imminent breach of the rights of Palestinians in Gaza." The court "may at any time decide to examine proprio motu whether the circumstances of the case require the indication of provisional measures which ought to be taken or complied with by any or all of the parties," according to a statement. In the statement, the South African government expressed its extreme worry over the large-scale deaths, injuries, and destruction that have already occurred and will continue to result from the unprecedented military onslaught against Rafah. This would be a grave and irreversible violation of the Genocide Convention as well as the January 26, 2024, court order. Given the daily death toll in Gaza, South Africa believes this topic will receive the requisite urgency, the statement continued.
