Following a contentious vote, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was elected to a second term.
For a second term, Shehbaz Sharif has been voted prime minister by Pakistani politicians. Voter fraud accusations and political violence tainted last month's elections. A majority was not won by a single party. However, in order to create a coalition government and enable Sharif to be elected, the two biggest parties in parliament worked together.
16 Palestinians were killed by Israeli shelling on Thursday in Khan Younis, a southern coastal region of the Gaza Strip populated by refugees from attacks in other parts of the enclave, according to authorities at the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.
According to a Reuters spokesman, nine children were among the deceased. They said that tents set up by displaced persons had been in the vicinity of Israeli shelling.
The strike occurred in the Al-Mawasi region of Gaza; Reuters imagery showed a massive hole with debris surrounding it. Outside Khan Younis's Nasser Hospital, where people had gathered to pray, bodies covered in sacks and cloth were arranged in a row.
The Israeli military, which has previously stated that it is attempting to extract Hamas officials who may be hiding there, has recorded multiple skirmishes in Khan Younis.

The United States is to send $1 billion in fresh military aid to Israel, according to reports.
According to media reports, the Biden administration has informed Congress that it intends to give a $1 billion package of military aid to Israel, despite the US' objections to a full-scale invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza and worries over mounting civilian casualties. According to Reuters, the US Department of State sent the package to Congress for consideration on Tuesday, citing two anonymous US officials. According to congressional aides, the package, which has yet to be approved, contains approximately $700 million in tank ammo, $500 million in tactical vehicles, and $60 million in mortar rounds. The request for approval for the transfer of lethal weapons comes a week after President Joe Biden halted a single shipment of bombs due to concerns about Israel's offensive in Rafah, in Gaza's southernmost tip, from which the UN estimates that nearly half a million people have fled.
