Regarding Israel's Rafah offensive, South Africa urgently requests the International Court of Justice.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has been requested by the South African government to assess whether Israel's proposal to prolong military operations in Rafah "requires that the court uses its power to prevent further imminent breach of the rights of Palestinians in Gaza." The court "may at any time decide to examine proprio motu whether the circumstances of the case require the indication of provisional measures which ought to be taken or complied with by any or all of the parties," according to a statement. In the statement, the South African government expressed its extreme worry over the large-scale deaths, injuries, and destruction that have already occurred and will continue to result from the unprecedented military onslaught against Rafah. This would be a grave and irreversible violation of the Genocide Convention as well as the January 26, 2024, court order. Given the daily death toll in Gaza, South Africa believes this topic will receive the requisite urgency, the statement continued.
