8 million internally displaced Sudanese since April of last year - World at War

For the last eleven months, the Republic of Sudan—the third-largest country in Africa—has been devastated by conflict. On April 15, hostilities broke out between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, and the Sudanese armed forces. Following the toppling of former strongman Omar Al-Bashir in 2019, the army under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF under Mohamed Hamadan Dagalo shared authority with civilians. Additionally, the army and RSF collaborated to carry out a coup in 2021. However, the planned integration of the paramilitary RSF into the regular army—a politically motivated shift plan approved by the international community—caused a deterioration in ties between the army and the RSF.
More than 8 million people have been displaced by the conflict since it started in mid-April. It has also destroyed the capital city of Khartoum, sparked a humanitarian catastrophe, and led to ethnically motivated killings in Darfur. The Sudanese army now claims to have retaken the state broadcaster's Omdurman headquarters on March 12th, marking the biggest victory over rival paramilitary group RSF. Since shortly after hostilities broke out in mid-April, the RSF had possessed the headquarters. Details are brought to you by Mohammed Saleh.

Can Plastic-Eating Worms be the solution to the plastic pollution crisis?

Are these squirmy worms the solution to the pollution caused by plastics? That is the hope held by researchers at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. They already know that garbage is broken down at the molecular level by the organisms' gut biomes and that they can be modified to break down plastic even more efficiently.

At Tokyo's Haneda airport, a Japan Airlines aircraft carrying 379 passengers caught fire on the runway following a collision with a coast guard aircraft.
Tuesday at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, a passenger plane and a Japanese Coast Guard aircraft crashed and caught fire on the runway.

Before the entire aircraft was consumed by fire, Tetsuo Saito, the minister of transportation, verified that all 379 passengers aboard Japan Airlines flight JAL-516 had safely evacuated. Five crew members perished, while the coast guard plane's pilot managed to escape, according to Saito.

A significant fire and smoke explosion was captured on local TV footage of the Japan Airlines aircraft as it taxied after landing. Then, there was a fire in the vicinity of the wing. An hour later, footage revealed the airliner entirely on fire.
According to Kyodo, the Coast Guard aircraft was scheduled to travel to Niigata to give relief supplies to those impacted by the tragedy. The incident occurred just one day after a series of earthquakes shook western Japan, killing over 50 people in the Ishikawa prefecture.

The UN secretary-general issued a dire warning on Friday, stating that there is an urgent need for a "quantum leap" in the delivery of life-saving supplies because children in Gaza are dying of starvation and dehydration. "The doors to starvation are opened when the gates to aid are closed," declared Guterres.

The Mali junta violates its electoral pledge.

Mali As one opposition lawmaker put it, the junta's order to cease political activity was collectively rejected on Thursday by political parties and civil society organizations, who also pledged to file a legal challenge against the "dictatorial" action. Following a coup in 2020, military control has been in place in West Africa. Due to growing tensions, major parties and other organizations denounced the junta on March 31 for failing to schedule elections by the agreed-upon deadline.

The crucial question is: How will the universe end?

Humanity has been staring at the night sky and considering the fate of the universe for millennia. The dominant theory holds that the Big Bang represents a massive explosion that created the universe and sent it on an unending course of expansion. In our upcoming report, we describe the most recent findings on the topic.
